‘The Transportable Herman Dune’ is an acoustic anthology in three portions, by which 22 years of songwriting are laid bare, stripped to probably the most intimate bone, an being released at intervals over a chain of months. Despite the fact that sonically naked, the songs are bundled up in emotion and loaded with life. Centre-stage are David Ivar’s songs, together with his 1954 guitar, his Nineteen Thirties mandolin, and his voice, plus outstanding visitors: Julie Doiron, Mayon (Ivar’s life partner), Caitlin Rose, Jolie Holland, and Kimya Dawson providing vocal counterpoint.
